2024 GMC Sierra Owners Face Transmission Problems and Lengthy Delays
Reports are surfacing of 2024 GMC Sierra owners experiencing significant transmission failures, with some waiting months for necessary parts to complete repairs. This issue has caused frustration and concern among owners of the newly redesigned trucks.
One owner, Matheus Picceli, shared his experience on the GMC Sierra Owner’s Facebook page. His 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3-liter 1500 with a 10-speed transmission failed after only 6,500 miles. He reported that his truck has been at the dealership for more than 60 days waiting for parts. “I’ve filed a claim through BBB Autoline, but GM is delaying the process,” Picceli stated expressing his frustration.
This problem isn’t isolated. Other owners of 2024 GMC Sierra and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado models are reporting similar issues.
What Other Owners are Saying
Katie Szymanski experienced a valve body failure in her 2024 GMC 1500 SLE 5.3-liter V8. She has owned the truck since August 2024 and reported that her vehicle has under 10,000 miles on the odometer. Szymanski stated that there is “NO ETA for a replacement valve body” and she is “So pissed with GM.”
Adam Cummings indicated that the delays are not due to GM intentionally slowing down the process, but rather parts unavailability. “The last valve body I ordered for a 10-speed took almost 2 months to come,” Cummings revealed. He added, “They are shipping as fast as they can build them, and there is basically a waiting list.”
Dale Helmick, who owns a 2019 Sierra, is taking his truck in for the fifth time for transmission issues. He is on his fourth torque converter in his truck with 106,000 miles. Besides the transmission troubles, his vehicle is also leaking oil.
Marty Sica mentioned a recall on both transmissions and recommends other owners look into it.
General Motors Response and Recall
In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for specific Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from 2020-2022; however, this recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.
Class Action Lawsuit
Adding to the concerns, General Motors is facing a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit is about defective transmissions and alleges the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with these faulty parts. The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured between 2015 and 2019.
Persistent Problems in Newer Models?
Reports have shown that newer models, including the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the respective 10L80 transmission, are experiencing similar issues. Discussions on Reddit highlight instances of torque converter failures, “blown valve bodies,” and concerns about the transmissions overheating and causing premature wear, particularly when towing heavy loads.
GM Acknowledges the Problem
AC, an owner on the GMC Sierra Facebook page, mentioned that GM provided him with payments and a loaner vehicle while his truck was being repaired due to delays in parts. He was reportedly given a brand new Traverse High Country to drive for eight months while he waited for parts.
Final Thoughts
The ongoing transmission issues with the 2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado are causing significant inconvenience for owners. With extended wait times for parts, customers are stuck without their vehicles for extended periods. It remains to be seen how General Motors will address these ongoing problems.
