Elevating Opulence: A Review of the 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ
Few vehicles embody excess and luxury quite like the Cadillac Escalade. Arguably deserving of its own unique category, this “full-size” SUV has a rich history dating back to 1999. While it has consistently been one of the largest production vehicles available, the fifth generation, introduced in 2020, marked a significant evolution. The pinnacle of this evolution arrived in in 2023 with the Escalade IQ, a fully electric version that has redefined luxury.
Starting at $129,990 for the base Luxury 1 model and reaching $150,490 for the Sport 2 without any optional extras, the Escalade IQ presents an impressive value proposition. Even without selecting any add-ons, the Escalade IQ provides an extraordinary experience.
Power and Performance
Let’s delve into the impressive specifications of this machine. The Escalade IQ is a substantial vehicle, weighing nearly 9,000 pounds – almost 3,000 pounds heavier than a Hummer H2. Its length extends to 224.3 inches (18.69 feet). Despite this mass, the Escalade IQ delivers astounding performance. In “Velocity Max” mode, it generates 750 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.7 seconds.
Drive modes include Tour, Sport, Tow/Haul, Snow/Ice, Off-Road, Terrain, and a customizable “My Mode.” While each mode performs as expected, “Sport” is particularly well-suited to maximize performance with Velocity Max, as it tightens steering responsiveness and adjusts the suspension and engine calibration to be more responsive. Expect Miata-like handling, but it does help with curvy roads.
Its 24-module Ultium battery boasts a capacity exceeding 200 kWh, providing a driving range of 460 miles on a full charge. Using a 350 kW DC fast charger, you can add over 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Moreover, it can tow up to 8,000 pounds, making it a formidable choice for those needing to haul.
All-wheel drive is, of course, a standard feature.
Interior and Technology
The interior is exceptionally luxurious, with the latest in automotive technology. Front occupants are treated to a stunning 55-inch curved pillar-to-pillar touchscreen with crystal-clear 8K resolution for the driver and 4K resolution for the passenger. The passenger can also enjoy a wide array of infotainment options, including YouTube and Hulu, or any external HDMI-connected source.
Audio is delivered through either a 19-speaker AKG audio system on Luxury 1 and Sport 1 models or an AKG 36-speaker audio system on Luxury 2 and Sport 2 models. Both options fill the cabin with music with exceptional clarity.
However, there are shortcomings, most notably the integration of essential functions within the touchscreen interface. The climate controls, for instance, remain hidden within the center console screen. This forces drivers to take their eyes off of the road to adjust the climate. Another design choice that hinders functionality is the split-screen ratio, especially when using navigation alongside other applications. Unlike other systems that offer even window splits, the Escalade IQ’s approach wastes space on the massive screen.
Despite these downsides, the infotainment system is responsive and user-friendly, with a pleasing minimalist aesthetic.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
The Escalade IQ features the standard GM Super Cruise, Night Vision, and 4-wheel steer with Arrival Mode, which allows drivers to angle the vehicle at a curb to ensure that they are noticed. Super Cruise functions effectively and alleviates some of the stress from the daily commute. Cadillac has also incorporated standard safety features, including Blind Zone Steering Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, and HD Surround Vision.
Self-park is another aspect of the car’s tech capabilities. In practice, the system had some issues. The car had trouble utilizing available spaces, and when it did park, the process was slow.
The Verdict
When driven manually, the Escalade IQ delivers an impressive experience. However, the focus is clearly on providing opulent comfort for passengers. The true enjoyment of the Escalade IQ comes from being chauffeured, with massaging, heated seats, and extensive infotainment options. With the new electric powertrain, the IQ retains the Escalade’s legacy while adding significant power.
The interior finishes are dependent on the trim, which is a bit of a drawback. Cadillac could offer additional options for customization. The Luxury 1 and Sport 1 models are limited to grayscale leather seats paired with dark accents, while the Luxury 2 and Sport 2 models have options for a darker tan, or dark blue leather. A broader range of exterior colors and interior options would further enhance its allure. Although the Escalade IQ’s goal is to act as a high-tech haven on wheels and deliver an opulent experience, it manages to deliver on its promise.
Cadillac reported that Escalade sales were up 3.5% in 2024, and the model has remained the #1 selling car in its segment since 2014, cementing its position as a quintessential luxury SUV.
