The Godfather of SUVs
The V12 engine: a symbol of automotive excess. For years, we’ve heard of its impending demise, yet high-performance sports cars continue to emerge with this configuration, prompting celebration from car enthusiasts. However, Rolls-Royce has remained steadfast in its commitment to the V12 for decades. In fact, three of the four models currently offered by the brand are powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12, and in many ways, its most extravagant application is the Cullinan Black Badge.

While every Rolls-Royce exudes a certain level of extravagance, the Cullinan takes it a step further. Being an SUV, it’s already a statement. The Black Badge treatment adds a menacing aura to the vehicle, which suits it remarkably well. We’ll discuss the enhanced engine performance later, along with the hefty premium of Rs 1.6 crore, but the Black Badge treatment also gives the SUV a more aggressive, brooding look.

Exterior Design: Subtle Yet Significant
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge Series II facelift injects much-needed character into the imposing face of the original.
The hallmark chrome trim is now dark chrome, including the window surrounds, door handles, exhaust surrounds, the Pantheon grille, and the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem. The headlamps and tail-lamps have been darkened as well, and the badges are black. 23-inch wheels are available, and the Black Badge offers a more aggressive two-tone design that reveals the brake calipers. Rolls-Royce offers nearly limitless color customization, encouraging owners to choose bold hues to offset all the black.
Interior and Features: Bespoke Luxury
The interior offers a choice of an all-black cabin or one with vibrant colors in sharp contrast to the piano black or dark metallic dashboard trim – the only options in a Black Badge. Interior quality continues to be outstanding, from the uniformity of the stitches to the flawless leather and the precise fit of the trim pieces. The Cullinan boasts a taller dashboard fascia, but the layout remains familiar, with greater personalization options available in the Series II facelift.
One highly recommended option is the ‘Sanctuary’ rear seat configuration, which features two individual chairs—powered, heated, ventilated, and massaging—plus a drinks fridge and a glass partition for the luggage compartment. Space is abundant, with its limo-like 3.3-meter wheelbase and a commanding seating position.

Engine and Performance: Power and Refinement
The V12 engine, positioned under the long bonnet, remains largely unchanged. The standard Cullinan delivers 571hp and 850Nm, but the Black Badge elevates those figures to 600hp and 900Nm.
Pushing the ‘Low’ button on the gear stalk unleashes the engine’s power. A subtle burble permeates the cabin, signaling potent performance without being uncouth.
Once you disengage the Low button, the Cullinan reverts to its standard Rolls-Royce demeanor, and this is where the experience truly shines. The burble subsides, the steering lightens, and the suspension relaxes, delivering a driving experience that’s surprisingly easy and not intimidating.
Ride and Handling: Defying Physics

Rolls-Royce’s mass management is exemplary. While the 2.9-tonne Cullinan’s high center of gravity could be a challenge, the vehicle manages body roll with ease. Moreover, its ability to maintain composed and comfortable handling at high speeds on any surface is remarkable.
Price and Verdict: Is it Worth It?
The Cullinan is named after the world’s largest gem diamond; big, bold, valuable and indestructible. The Cullinan is the highest-selling model in the range. The Black Badge commands a Rs 1.59 crore premium over the regular Cullinan.
The Series II updates, while subtle, widen personalization possibilities and increase the price tag to Rs 11.92 crore for the Black Badge. The Cullinan is the same as a Phantom, albeit with a different and arguably more desirable form factor, and certainly a more practical one. Its road presence, effortless performance, and peerless luxury make it the undisputed king of SUVs.
