Introduction to the 2026 Lexus ES
The 2026 Lexus ES has been unveiled at the Shanghai auto show, marking a significant departure from its predecessor with its angular design and choice of hybrid or fully electric powertrains. The new ES continues to ride on the TNGA GA-K platform, shared with the Toyota Camry, but offers more diverse powertrain options.
Powertrain Options
The ES is available in three powertrain configurations: a hybrid ES350h, and two electric variants, the ES350e and ES500e. The ES350h hybrid produces 244 horsepower and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. It features a 2.5-liter inline-four engine paired with an eAxle, resulting in improved performance over the previous generation.
The electric models offer distinct performance characteristics: the front-wheel-drive ES350e produces 221 hp and accelerates to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive ES500e generates 338 hp and reaches 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. Lexus claims the ES350e can travel up to 300 miles on a charge when equipped with 19-inch wheels.
Design and Features
The 2026 ES boasts a more aggressive design language, drawing inspiration from the 2023 LF-ZC concept and Lexus’s first EV, the RZ SUV. The new ES is approximately 6.5 inches longer with a 3-inch longer wheelbase than its predecessor, giving it a more spacious interior. The electric models feature a blank front panel with a lower bumper vent to cool the battery, while hybrid models retain a narrow upper grille.
Inside, the ES offers a minimalist design with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.0-inch touchscreen running Lexus’s latest infotainment system. The cabin features “3D-printed door trim that recreates the depth and flow of natural bamboo” with integrated ambient lighting. An Executive package will be available for the first time in North America, featuring upgraded rear seats with a passenger-side ottoman and massage function.
Technology and Safety
The 2026 ES will be the first Lexus to feature the Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, bringing the latest active safety and driver-assistance features. The vehicle’s infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a more responsive built-in voice assistant.
Availability
The 2026 Lexus ES is set to go on sale in the United States next year, although specific details for the U.S. market are still forthcoming.
