2027 Audi R8

By Austin Parsons
Prior to its discontinuation in 2023, the Audi R8 held the reputation of being the gentleman’s mid-engined supercar. It offered a more refined, daily-drivable experience compared to the often boisterous nature of other supercars, while still delivering impressive performance and the thrilling sound of a high-performance engine.
The R8 is rumored to be making a comeback in 2027, promising a similar experience. In keeping with its past, which saw it borrowing underpinnings from Lamborghini, the new R8 is expected to utilize a version of the Temerario’s all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid V-8 powertrain. This could potentially deliver close to 1,000 horsepower.
While the R8 will likely offer a more comfortable ride and interior compared to the Lamborghini, its Italian connection will likely shine through, thanks to its mechanical link to Sant’Agata’s hybridized model.
What’s New for 2027?
After its discontinuation in 2023, the Audi R8 is set for a revival. Similar to the first and second-generation R8s, which shared underpinnings with the Lamborghini Gallardo and Huracán, respectively, the latest R8 is rumored to share its platform and powertrain with Lamborghini’s Temerario supercar.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2027 Audi R8 is anticipated to start around $210,000 and could reach $225,000 depending on the trim level and chosen options.
- R8 Coupe: $210,000 (est)
- R8 Spyder: $225,000 (est)
Audi hasn’t released pricing details for the upcoming R8 yet, but we can make an educated guess based on the historical pricing of Audi’s flagship sportscar. The two previous R8 generations were considerably less expensive than the Lamborghinis they were based on. Given that the Temerario is expected to start around $290,000, it wouldn’t be surprising if its German counterpart is at least $80,000 less costly. In addition to the coupe, a convertible Spyder model is also expected, which will likely be priced higher than the coupe.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
While specific details are still uncertain, the revived R8 will probably feature a version of the Lamborghini Temerario’s plug-in hybrid V-8 powertrain. In the Lambo, a turbocharged V-8 engine works with three electric motors to generate 907 horsepower, delivered to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The electric motors are powered by a small 3.8-kWh battery pack, providing a few miles of all-electric driving. The Audi’s output might be further enhanced by the time it reaches showrooms. This could also depend on if parent company Volkswagen Group wants the Lamborghini to remain the more potent supercar.
With all-wheel drive and horsepower figures approaching four digits, the upcoming R8 has the potential to be the quickest accelerating and fastest model Audi has ever produced. Potential future details to look for include:
- 0–60-MPH Times
- Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
- Infotainment and Connectivity
- Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
- Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
