23 Tesla Features That Make These EVs Unique

Tesla has carved out a unique space in the automotive industry, not just for its electric powertrains but also for its innovative features and tech-forward approach. Beyond the basics of electric vehicles, Tesla offers a range of add-ons and “easter eggs” that have cultivated a devoted following. Here’s a look at 23 unique features that make Tesla cars stand out in the market.

    1. Autopilot

All Tesla models come standard with Autopilot, a driver-assistance system. This system enables the car to steer, accelerate, and brake automatically within its lane. Tesla continues to upgrade Autopilot as a central feature. It’s important to remember that Autopilot is not a substitute for driver attention, but rather a tool to make driving easier and reduce accidents. New models often feature advanced camera systems with a 360-degree view, like the eight cameras and 12 sensors cited on the company’s website. Furthermore, the Full-Self Driving (FSD) add-on offers additional capabilities like lane changes and traffic-light/stop-sign recognition. The FSD feature is currently in beta testing and is available for a subscription fee.

    1. Caraoke

In a twist of entertainment, Tesla introduced a “Caraoke” feature in 2019. This allows owners to choose from a diverse library of music, complete with lyrics, and the feature has been particularly successful in China. Tesla even launched microphones specifically for the feature. To use the feature, the car must be parked.

Select Tesla models (Model X, Model Y, Model S, and Model 3) are equipped with a HEPA filtration system. This system works to prevent pollutants and other harmful particles from entering the car’s cabin. The system filters everything from allergens and bacteria to pollution. Tesla released a video comparing the system to non-Tesla filters in 2022.

    1. Touchscreen Control

All Tesla models come with a distinctive touchscreen interface that consolidates most of the car’s features. This includes standard functions like climate control, navigation, and media. Additional functions like games, streaming services, and traffic updates are also available on it.

Tesla’s infotainment system has apps like YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu. A variety of entertainment options (Theater, Arcade, Toybox, and Browser) enhance the overall experience. The Arcade function allows drivers to use the steering wheel buttons or a USB controller to play games. Most of the entertainment features are only available when the car is parked.

    1. Web Browser

Tesla connectivity gives drivers access to features that use data, such as streaming music, media, and traffic visualization. The premium connectivity option allows access to a range of websites while the car is parked.

Sentry Mode uses the car’s external cameras to record and alert an owner if the parked vehicle is bumped or otherwise disturbed. It helps monitor the car remotely and gives visual evidence of any incidents.

Tesla has made a large investment in its Supercharger network. The company claims a 15-minute charge can add up to 200 miles of range. This offers a convenience that sets Tesla apart.

    1. Key Options

While a traditional key is available, Tesla offers more unique options, including key fobs shaped like the car or the ability to use a smartphone app as a key.

    1. Over-the-Air Updates

Tesla vehicles frequently receive over-the-air software updates. These updates introduce new features and improvements to the car’s functionality and safety. Other automakers have since adopted this approach.

The “Actually Smart Summon” feature allows the car to navigate parking lots to come to the driver or go to a specified target. Drivers can now open the “Summon” tab on the Tesla app to get a live view of their vehicles. They can then select “COME TO ME” or “GO TO TARGET” to make the vehicle come to owners or go toward a chosen spot on its own. If that seems like too much, there’s also Dumb Summon, which can simply move your Tesla back and forth.
