A 37-year-old Las Vegas man, Angel Franco Merida, was arrested on Thursday after the pickup truck he was driving struck and killed a 33-year-old woman in a crosswalk near North Las Vegas Airport. The incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. when Merida’s 2013 Ram 1500 went through a red light while traveling south on North Rancho Drive, striking the pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.
The woman was rushed to University Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. As of Friday afternoon, her name had not been released pending notification of next of kin. Merida was charged with reckless driving resulting in death or severe injury. Authorities reported no signs of impairment at the time of the incident.
This fatal crash marked the 81st traffic-related death within the Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for the year. Merida was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Friday afternoon.
