Luxury cars often symbolize status and wealth. However, even for those who can afford them, a warranty can be a worthwhile investment. Many appear stylish and drive smoothly, but some have hidden issues. According to expert Doug DeMuro, these models should not be purchased without warranty due to potential underlying issues.
Ferrari F355 Spider
“In the early days, these cars were known for having engine issues really early on,” said Kennan Rolsen on the Garage Talks podcast.
This beautiful sports car is known for its handling. It’s this high performance, however, that can lead to problems. The F355 Spider had significant engine issues early on, resulting in expensive repairs. Today, these cars can cost around $100,000.
Lamborghini Countach
These 1980s Lamborghinis, now worth over $400,000, were products of their time, manufactured with less advanced technology than today’s cars. Production was limited due to slower assembly.
“The production was limited in part because they simply didn’t have the ability to craft more,” DeMuro said on his podcast.
Dealerships lacked the infrastructure to support the frequent breakages of these early Lamborghinis. Buying these cars doesn’t come with a factory warranty or peace of mind.
Bentley Arnage T
With the Bentley Arnage T now priced under $40,000, they have become popular among enthusiasts. Despite their decreased price they can still have expensive repairs.
They’re not that unreliable … but when something breaks, good luck. You go into not thinking you’ll spend $2,000 to replace bulbs, but that’s part of the problem,” DeMuro said on Garage Talks.
Due to the high cost of repair bills, a warranty is recommended for the Arnage T. It is a nearly 20-year-old car, and there are bound to be issues if one were to own this vehicle.
Aston Martin Lagonda
Also known as “The Anteater,” this 1980s car is known for its long hood and unusual shape. It features quirky gimmicks like an odometer beneath the hood.
“It was a company that was desperate to get cars out the door, pay the rent, the lights,” DeMuro said in the podcast episode. “It wasn’t developed in any correct manner or manufactured properly.”
DeMuro suggests owners are lucky to get this car running, which is another good reason to opt for a warranty. This means consulting with a warranty company is recommended for those who may want to buy a Lagonda.
BMW E60 M5
This BMW sedan was the first to use a V10 gasoline engine, but it has a history of problems. It has developed a reputation for being unreliable.
“This car has developed a reputation for being problematic, which has really killed its value,” DeMuro said on his podcast.
Now, the M5 can be found for around $30,000. It is not uncommon to buy a used M5 with two or three engine replacements under warranty. It is a difficult car to own due to its many problems.
