Salem, OR – A 77-year-old man died and a 49-year-old man was hospitalized with critical injuries after being struck by a pickup truck early Saturday morning in north Salem, according to the Salem Police.
Police responded to the scene on Silverton Road NE near Highway Ave NE just after 2 a.m. Both men were transported to Salem Health hospital. Raymond Dale, the 77-year-old, was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police confirmed. The 49-year-old man remains hospitalized.
A 17-year-old female, who was with the two men, witnessed the crash, police reported. The driver of the truck, a 63-year-old Salem man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The Salem Police Traffic Team is investigating the incident, with assistance from Salem Fire personnel, who also responded to the scene. The road was closed for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation. This marks the third traffic fatality in Salem this year, police said.
