ROME (AP) — An 80-year-old man drove a compact luxury Mercedes-Benz A Class sedan down Rome’s famous Spanish Steps early on Tuesday, getting stuck part way down, according to municipal police. The man, a Rome resident, was cited on the spot for driving on the monument in the historic center after testing negative for alcohol. Police said he couldn’t explain how he ended up driving down the steps, and it was unclear if the car was his. Firefighters later removed the small sporty car using a crane. The Spanish Steps, a popular tourist spot and filming location, have never been intended for motor vehicles, though some have attempted to drive down them in the past.
