Ford and its luxury brand, Lincoln, have announced a recall affecting 269 vehicles. The recall addresses a potential safety issue where the vehicles could unexpectedly move forward, even when the gear selector is in neutral or reverse.
Recalled models include select vehicles from the following:
- 2024 Ford Ranger
- 2024-2025 Ford Bronco
- 2024-2025 Ford F-150
- 2025 Ford Explorer
- 2025 Ford Mustang
- 2025 Lincoln Aviator
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from “transmission main control valve bodies with out-of-specification machining.” This machining error can prevent the transmission from fully engaging into neutral or reverse, despite what the gear selector indicates. Consequently, the vehicle might move forward if the accelerator is tapped while in neutral or reverse.
Owners may receive a warning, as Ford indicates that a malfunction indicator light and a wrench symbol may illuminate on the instrument panel. However, drivers might not notice these warnings if they are focused on the area behind the vehicle, expecting it to reverse.
Ford reports that it is aware of at least five warranty claims related to this problem but, thankfully, knows of no accidents at this time. The remedy involves dealers replacing the transmission main control valve body. Recall repairs are provided at no cost to the vehicle owner. It’s important to verify if your vehicle needs a recall repair by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or your preferred auto service provider. Millions of people drive recalled vehicles annually, unaware of the potential safety risks.
