Mercedes-Benz to Launch Luxury Vans with S-Class Flair

Mercedes-Benz is set to shake up the luxury van market with its upcoming Vision V concept, which will debut in Shanghai. The automaker has revealed that the concept will preview a new lineup of vans, including models bearing the VLE and VLS nameplates, aligning with the existing product lines. Notably, the VLS will be part of the prestigious S-Class family, indicating a high-end offering.

    Vision V Concept Interior

The sole image released by Mercedes showcases the rear seat area of the Vision V, featuring captain’s chairs separated by a leather-lined armrest. An ornate burl walnut tray table emerges from the console, complete with beverage holders and a sophisticated chessboard featuring crystal and sterling silver pieces. The interior is replete with ambient lighting, including LED strips glowing icy blue on the console and within the Burmester speaker grilles.

The tuck-and-roll seat upholstery gives the Vision V a mid-century aesthetic, with deployable leg rests and bolster-style individual cushions that evoke high-end furniture. The attention to detail suggests Mercedes is serious about its future luxury van offerings.

    Nomenclature and Market Expectations

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the new vans will be offered in VLE and VLS grades, with the latter occupying the top tier of luxury. The VLE is expected to be more accessible, while the VLS will cater to the ultra-luxury segment. Given the concept’s debut in Shanghai, it’s likely these vehicles will be offered in China, a market receptive to sliding passenger doors. They may also be popular in Japan, where luxury vehicles like the Lexus LM are in demand.

    Potential US Market Impact

Although Mercedes no longer sells the Metris in the US market, the VLE could potentially fill the gap if priced competitively. The VLS, on the other hand, could compete with aftermarket luxury conversions, offering a factory-approved alternative.

The new lineup is expected to bring significant luxury and comfort to the van segment, with features like advanced ambient lighting and premium interiors. While specifics about the powertrain are not detailed, the mention of an 800-volt EV architecture in related concept vehicles suggests a high-performance electric capability.
