Kia has officially unveiled its plans to introduce an electric pickup truck to the North American market, surprising many who had speculated about a potential Tasman-based or Sportage-based vehicle. The South Korean automaker, known for its diverse lineup of vehicles, revealed this information during the 2025 Kia CEO Investor Day.
Background on Kia
Kia is a South Korean automaker headquartered in Seoul, founded in 1944 as a bicycle manufacturer. Over the years, it has evolved to become the second-largest automaker in South Korea, right behind Hyundai. Kia began selling cars in North America in 1992 and has since established a significant presence in the market.
The New Electric Pickup Truck
The electric pickup truck is based on a new EV platform designed for both urban and outdoor use. Kia recognized the diverse market needs for pickups, whether with internal combustion engines (ICE) or battery-electric vehicles. While the Tasman will be sold to Korea, Australia, and other emerging markets, America will receive a different model. The new truck is expected to have a robust towing system and off-road capabilities, along with best-in-class interior and cargo space and advanced infotainment and safety features.
Market Expectations
Kia aims to sell 90,000 units of the electric truck annually and achieve a 7% market share. This will be challenging, as the segment is dominated by competitors like the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck, and the forthcoming Scout Terra.
Production Plans
The upcoming electric Kia truck will likely be manufactured in the US to avoid the Chicken Tax and recent auto tariffs. Kia has already started local production of the EV6 at its West Point, Georgia assembly plant, making it a potential location for the EV truck’s assembly as well.
Timeline
Although Kia hasn’t provided a specific timeline for the launch, it’s expected to arrive within the next five years, aligning with the automaker’s plans outlined for 2025 to 2030.
