Single-Car Accident on Route 5 in Westmoreland Results in Injuries and Road Closure

A serious single-car accident occurred on Route 5 in the Town of Westmoreland on April 26 at approximately 6:40 a.m., according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol. Deputies found that a 17-year-old male from Utica was driving a black 2012 BMW at a high speed westbound on Route 5 when he lost control of the vehicle.

The BMW exited the northern side of the roadway, striking and damaging a mailbox and utility pole before continuing off the road. It then collided with an unoccupied 2010 gray GMC pickup truck parked in a driveway, causing damage to both vehicles. The accident resulted in downed electrical wires across Route 5, forcing the road to be closed until National Grid crews cleared the scene.

The teenage driver was transported to Wynn Hospital by the Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Company for non-life-threatening injuries. Deputies issued traffic summons to the driver, which are returnable to Westmoreland Town Court at a later date.

The response effort was assisted by multiple agencies, including the New York State Police, Westmoreland Fire Department, Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Company, Kirkland Auto Tow Company, National Grid, and NYS DOT.
