Slate Auto has been secretly developing its electric pickup truck for several years, assembling a team of experienced professionals and securing high-profile backers, including Jeff Bezos. The company aims to provide an affordable, customizable vehicle starting with a bare-bones model. The base SLATE pickup truck measures 174.6 inches in length, significantly shorter than competitors like the Ford Maverick. It comes with a 150 kW rear-axle-mounted motor producing 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

    Key Features and Specifications

The SLATE offers two battery options: a 52.7 kWh unit with an estimated 150-mile range and an 84.3 kWh battery with an estimated 240-mile range. The vehicle features an NACS (Tesla) plug and supports DC fast charging up to 120 kW, allowing it to charge to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. The batteries are sourced and manufactured in the United States, with final assembly taking place in Indianapolis, Indiana.

    Customization Options

One of the SLATE’s most distinctive features is its modular design. Customers can transform the basic pickup into various configurations, including a five-passenger SUV, open-top SUV, or fastback wagon. The vehicle can be lifted or lowered, and numerous upgrades are available. Owners can purchase parts as DIY kits or have them assembled by professionals. All parts and accessories are covered under warranty, regardless of installation method.

    Pricing and Availability

The SLATE is expected to start at around $27,000 before rebates and tax credits, potentially dropping to $20,000 after incentives. Production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Pricing for accessories will be announced separately, with larger components shipped flat-pack to customers.

    Additional Features

The vehicle’s payload capacity is rated at over 1,400 lbs, with a towing capacity of up to 1,000 lbs. The SLATE features composite body panels that eliminate the need for traditional painting. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 8 seconds and has a top speed of 90 mph. The suspension system utilizes coil springs with a DeDion setup in the rear.

    Conclusion

The SLATE pickup truck represents an innovative approach to electric vehicle design, offering customers a highly customizable platform at an affordable price point. With its modular design and range of upgrade options, it has the potential to appeal to a wide range of consumers looking for a versatile and adaptable vehicle.
