Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its luxury offerings with the introduction of the VLS, an ultra-luxurious variant of its next-generation V-Class MPV. According to Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ design boss, the VLS will provide “luxury car buyers with a true penthouse-style ‘third space'” by combining the luxury of an S-Class limousine with the spaciousness of an MPV.
The new VLS model, previewed by the Vision V-Class concept at the Shanghai motor show, is expected to launch next year with a price tag approaching £100,000. Wagener described the VLS as “an S-Class van,” designed to cater to the luxury car market, following the success of models like the GLS SUV and CLS four-door coupé.
The VLS will offer significantly enhanced comfort and luxury compared to the standard V-Class, leveraging the MPV’s larger interior to provide features such as first-class seats that can recline or be used for sleeping. A large screen monitor will separate the passenger compartment, creating a private space that mimics the comfort of home.

While Mercedes already offers a premium version of the current V-Class, the VLS will be tangibly better equipped and more lavishly appointed. Wagener noted that the Vision V-Class concept is “very close to production,” indicating that the final product will closely resemble the concept shown at the motor show.
The standard version of the new V-Class will be badged VLE, although details about powertrains and specifications have not been released. The introduction of the VLS raises questions about the future role of the Mercedes-Maybach brand, with Wagener suggesting that a Maybach version of the V-Class, emphasizing its spaciousness and first-class seating, is a possibility.
The VLS represents Mercedes’ efforts to expand its presence in the luxury vehicle market by offering a unique blend of space, comfort, and luxury that sedans cannot match. With its expected launch next year, the VLS is poised to become a significant player in the luxury MPV segment.
