Roush F-150: A Versatile Off-Roader
The Roush F-150 is a modified version of the Ford F-150, designed to tackle challenging off-road terrain while maintaining on-road comfort. We took it to the Rowher Flats staging area north of Sleepy Valley, CA, to put its capabilities to the test.

The Roush F-150 is based on the standard F-150, with the Michigan-based tuner working off the STX, XLT, and Lariat trims. Our tester utilized a fully loaded XLT as its base, benefiting from factory upgrades such as a locking rear differential and premium in-cabin extras. The Roush package starts at $19,995 above the price of the base truck and includes a performance coil-over suspension, 20-inch satin black wheels, and 33-inch General Grabber A/TX All-Terrain tires.
Off-Road Capabilities
With all-wheel drive engaged and the rear differential locked, we headed straight for the challenging trails at Rowher Flats. The Roush F-150 showcased its strengths, particularly its maneuverability on tight tracks thanks to its comparatively narrow footprint. The truck’s extra ground clearance, courtesy of Roush’s leveling Performance Coil-Over Suspension, allowed it to traverse rough surfaces without transmitting harshness through the cabin.

The Roush F-150 benefits from some off-roading features shared with the Raptor and Raptor R, including Ford’s 360-degree camera system. This feature provides a bird’s-eye view of the truck and a live feed of the road ahead, making it easier to navigate challenging terrain.
On-Road Performance
On open sections with more forgiving surfaces, the Roush F-150 feels tremendously quick, thanks to its supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 705 hp and 635 lb-ft of torque. The truck’s upgraded suspension keeps body motions settled, creating a feeling of confidence. On the road, the Roush F-150 delivers power consistently to the redline while emitting a throaty note from its twin rear pipes.

Comparison to the F-150 Raptor R
While the F-150 Raptor R has its advantages, particularly its distinct look and off-road-focused design, the Roush F-150 offers a compelling alternative. With a similar price point of around $112,000, the Roush F-150 matches the Raptor R’s straight-line performance while offering superior towing capacity. The Roush F-150 can tow up to 13,500 lb, compared to the Raptor R’s 8,700 lb limit.
Conclusion
The Roush F-150 proves to be a capable off-roader with a dual personality, offering both impressive off-road capabilities and on-road comfort. While it may not have the same level of off-road focus as the F-150 Raptor R, it provides a versatile alternative with its own strengths.
