Dongfeng Nissan, Nissan’s joint venture in China, has launched its N7 all-electric sedan with surprisingly competitive pricing. The N7 is priced between RMB 119,900 ($16,450) and RMB 149,900, positioning it similarly to Xpeng’s popular Mona M03, which is priced between RMB 119,800 and RMB 155,800. This pricing strategy is significantly lower than BYD’s flagship sedan, the Han L EV, priced between RMB 219,800 and RMB 279,800.

    Vehicle Specifications and Features

The N7 is a mid to large-size sedan measuring 4,930 mm in length, 1,895 mm in width, and 1,484 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,915 mm. It is available in five variants: 510 Air, 510 Pro, 625 Pro, 510 Max, and 625 Max, with prices starting at RMB 119,900, RMB 129,900, RMB 139,900, RMB 139,900, and RMB 149,900 respectively.

The naming convention of the N7 variants corresponds to their CLTC range. The 510 km range variants are powered by a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, while the 625 km range variants use a 73 kWh LFP battery. All variants support 3C fast charging, capable of charging from 10% to 80% in 19 minutes, and external discharge up to 6.6 kW.

    Market Performance and Industry Context

Within an hour and 40 minutes of its launch, the N7 garnered 10,138 orders. This strong market response comes as Japanese car brands face challenges in China’s rapidly evolving EV market, where local brands have gained significant traction. According to the China Passenger Car Association, in March, NEV penetration was 72% for local brands, compared to 6% for mainstream joint venture brands.

Dongfeng Nissan’s management indicated that the company plans to launch at least five new models, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), by the end of 2026. The N7 is the first model designed and developed by Dongfeng Nissan’s Chinese team and is based on the Tianyan architecture, emphasizing comfort and targeting family users.

The N7 features a single-motor front-drive configuration with a peak power of 160 kW and peak torque of 305 Nm. It boasts a low wind resistance coefficient of Cd 0.208, enhancing energy efficiency. The interior includes a 15.6-inch center screen with 2.5K resolution and supports virtual voice assistants with advanced AI models for enhanced user experience.

The launch of the N7 represents a significant effort by Dongfeng Nissan to regain market share in China’s competitive EV landscape, where local brands have dominated. With its competitive pricing, robust features, and strong marketing strategy, the N7 aims to make a substantial impact.
