Driving the BYD Sealion 7: A Graceful Experience
The BYD Sealion 7, a Chinese carmaker’s offering in the electric SUV segment, promises a driving experience akin to swimming sealions – smooth and graceful. I had the opportunity to drive this vehicle for a few days in Delhi, and here’s what I observed.
The Good
The cabin quality of the Sealion 7 is reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz, though not quite at the level of the EQS. One of its standout features is a swiveling screen that can switch between portrait and landscape modes at the touch of a button. Being an all-wheel drive, it offers good high-speed stability and handling. On efficient driving, I managed to get almost 530 km of range, while the expected range is around 450 km even with inefficient driving.
The Not-So-Good
However, there are some drawbacks. The low-profile tyres make for a harsh ride on rough roads, despite being amazing on well-paved ones. Most functions, including ventilated seats, are controlled through the touchscreen, making them difficult to access while driving. The absence of a spare wheel is another concern. Rear visibility via the cabin mirror is poor, relying heavily on exterior mirrors and a camera with good resolution.
Why It Feels Nice
The structural rigidity provided by the battery pack as the floor gives the Sealion 7 a solid feel, showcasing Chinese car manufacturers’ advancements. While competitors like Kia EV6 and some Mercedes-Benz and BMW models are comparable or even better, they come at a higher price. The onus now is on Indian carmakers to match or better BYD’s offering in both quality and price.
In conclusion, the BYD Sealion 7 presents a compelling package with its smooth driving experience and robust build. However, potential buyers should consider factors like the service network and some of its drawbacks before making a decision.
