Revolutionary Sub-$20k Electric Pickup Truck Unveiled by Slate Auto

Slate Auto has quietly opened reservations for its innovative Slate pickup truck and SUV, promising a revolution in the automotive industry. The Slate is a battery-electric vehicle that will cost less than $20,000 and can be configured as either a basic two-seat pickup or a five-seat SUV. The reservation price is just $50.

Slate Auto's Basic Pickup Truck Design
The Slate’s design philosophy centers around personalization, offering a base vehicle that customers can customize to their preferences. The basic truck includes safety equipment, a battery and electric motor, flat gray paint, and a minimalist interior. Buyers can then add features such as vehicle wraps, roof racks, or aftermarket accessories.

    Key Features of the Slate

    • Design and Customization: The Slate is designed to be bare-bones, allowing for extensive customization. It comes with a standard-sized short bed on a 108.9-inch wheelbase.
    • Powertrain: Single-motor, rear-wheel-drive with 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
    • Battery and Range: Standard 52.7-kWh battery pack offering 150 miles of range, with an optional 84.3-kWh pack for up to 240 miles.
    • Charging: NACS plug with 11 kW on-board charging, supporting Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charging.
    • Dimensions: 174.6 inches long, 70.6 inches wide, and 69.3 inches high.
    • Cargo and Towing: Front trunk (7 sq-ft), bed (37 sq-ft), and SUV rear storage (34 sq-ft). Maximum payload is 1,433 lb, with a towing capacity of 1,000 lb.
Slate Auto's SUV Version with Removable Top
The Slate is backed by significant investors, including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and is expected to start production within the next three years. Manufacturing is planned for a location in the Midwest, potentially in Indiana. The company’s direct-to-consumer sales model and lack of current Amazon presence for sales are notable aspects of their strategy.

While the absence of an all-wheel-drive option might deter some potential buyers, the Slate represents a welcome addition to the compact pickup and SUV market. Its minimalist appeal and customization options make it an attractive prospect for those seeking a simple, low-cost electric vehicle.
