BYD’s Entry into Japan’s Mini EV Market
BYD, China’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to launch a new mini EV in Japan in 2026, posing a significant threat to domestic automakers. The company is already known for its affordable EVs, such as the Seagull, which is available in China for under $10,000.
Current Market Situation in Japan
Mini EVs, or kei cars, are extremely popular in Japan due to their affordability, ease of maneuverability in city streets, and practicality for daily use. In 2024, BYD sold 2,223 EVs in Japan, accounting for 4% of the country’s total EV sales. Meanwhile, two mini EVs – the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi’s eK X – represented over 40% of Japan’s EV sales last year.

Impact on Japanese Automakers
Japanese automakers like Suzuki, Subaru, and Nissan have traditionally relied on kei cars for domestic growth, with these vehicles accounting for around 40% of new vehicle sales in Japan last year, totaling approximately 1.55 million units. The Honda N-Box was the best-selling kei car in Japan for the third consecutive year.
BYD’s Competitive Advantage
BYD’s new mini EV is expected to start at around 2.6 million yen (approximately $18,000), competitive with the Nissan Sakura, which starts at 2.59 million yen. BYD’s ability to offer affordable EVs is attributed to its ultra-affordable electric car technology powered by the BYD Blade batteries, which are also used by other major manufacturers like Tesla, Toyota, and Hyundai.

Preparation for the Japanese Market
To prepare for its entry into Japan’s mini EV segment, BYD has opened a new website for job applications, seeking talent with extensive experience in the light vehicle business. The company has already started making inroads in Japan, having launched several of its popular EV models, including the Dolphin and Seal, and more recently, the Sealion 7 midsize smart electric SUV.
The launch of BYD’s mini EV in Japan is anticipated to shake up the country’s EV market, challenging the dominance of local automakers with its competitive pricing and advanced technology.
