The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is a luxurious roadster that, despite its name, doesn’t come with a V12 engine like its S 680 sedan counterpart. Instead, it features a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. This engine is shared with the SL 55 and SL 63 models. The SL 680 achieves impressive performance with its all-wheel drive and nine-speed automatic transmission, sprinting to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds. The power-operated fabric soft top can be raised or lowered while driving at speeds up to 37 mph, making it practical for unexpected weather changes. When the roof is down, the V8 engine’s sound is noticeable but remains relatively subdued unless the Sport driving mode is activated. In Sport mode, the exhaust flaps open further, enhancing the engine’s sound. This mode also adjusts the steering ratio for quicker responses and stiffens the electronically controlled dampers for a firmer ride, similar to the SL 55 and SL 63. The SL 680 performs admirably in Sport mode, with stable body control and proficient cornering thanks to the electronic rear differential.
