Man Arrested for Stealing 500 Gallons of Fuel from El Paso County Water District

SAN ELIZARIO, Texas — Deputies arrested a 40-year-old man they believe stole 500 gallons of fuel from the El Paso County Water Improvement District (EPCWID). According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Carlos Modesto was arrested after being caught driving a red pickup truck that was seen during a fuel theft on April 21.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that a caller had informed them that a well owned by the EPCWID had been tampered with, and approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel had been stolen by a man driving a red pickup truck. On April 23, during an investigation into a different case, deputies spotted a red pickup truck matching the description. The Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant, seizing one vehicle connected to the fuel theft as well as tools believed to have been used during the robbery.

Modesto was arrested on Sunday when deputies responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle near 12370 Socorro Rd. He was driving a 2005 red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and allegedly gave deputies a false name and resisted arrest. Modesto was booked into the El Paso County Jail Downtown and charged with property theft, failure to identify a fugitive with intent to give false information, and resisting arrest, search, or transport. His total bond was set at $17,500, and he was released the same day.
