Toyota Explores Compact Pickup Truck for US Market
Toyota is considering entering the compact pickup truck segment in America, potentially rivaling successful models like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz. This decision comes after Toyota’s North America COO, Mark Templin, confirmed the company’s interest in the segment during a recent interview with Bloomberg.
The compact pickup truck market has been gaining traction, with Ford selling over 130,000 Mavericks in 2024. Other manufacturers, such as Hyundai with the Santa Cruz and Honda with the Ridgeline, have also entered this segment, although with less success than Ford. Toyota’s potential entry would mark a significant move into a previously uncontested market for the Japanese automaker.

The proposed Toyota truck is expected to be smaller than the Tacoma and possibly even smaller than the RAV4 SUV. This strategy aligns with Toyota’s recent success with the RAV4, which was the best-selling vehicle in the US last year. The company’s confidence in the RAV4’s performance might be encouraging them to explore other opportunities in the market.
