Honda to Launch New Electric Vehicle in India
Honda Cars India has confirmed that it will introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) by the end of the next financial year. The announcement was made by Takashi Nakajima, the company’s new President and CEO, during an informal event in Delhi.
The upcoming EV will be a completely new model designed specifically for the Indian market, rather than being based on the existing Honda Elevate. While the exact body style of the new EV has not been officially revealed, media reports suggest it is likely to be an SUV, positioning it to compete with other popular EV models in India such as the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the forthcoming Maruti e-Vitara.

In preparation for the launch, Honda Cars India is working on establishing a charging network. The company is also focusing on expanding its hybrid vehicle lineup, with plans to increase the number of hybrid models available in the future. There are indications that Honda is developing a new platform to support its e-HEV hybrid technology, which may include a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
Currently, Honda’s product lineup in India includes the City, Amaze, and Elevate models, with the City offering a hybrid option. In April 2025, Honda sold 4,871 cars in total, including 3,360 domestic sales and 1,511 exports. Notably, Honda Cars India exported 45,167 units of the Elevate to various markets, primarily Japan, during the first nine months of 2024-25. In Japan, the Elevate is marketed as the Honda WR-V, marking Honda’s first made-in-India vehicle to be sold in its home market.
