The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a significant recall of over 235,000 Ram ProMaster vans manufactured between 2022 and 2025. The recall, initiated by Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, addresses an issue where the rearview cameras in the affected vehicles may fail to display images, potentially leading to increased risk of accidents while reversing.
Details of the Recall
The affected models include 2022-2025 Ram ProMaster vans, totaling approximately 235,000 vehicles. The problem lies in the rearview camera system, which may display a blank screen instead of the expected image. This issue reduces the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle, heightening the risk of collisions.
According to the NHTSA recall report, if a driver relies solely on the rearview camera and it displays a blank screen, they may not be aware of obstacles or other vehicles behind them. This could lead to a crash if the driver fails to take additional safety precautions before reversing.
Stellantis Response and Safety Precautions
Stellantis has stated that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. The company, identified in NHTSA reports as Chrysler (FCA US, LLC), has advised drivers of affected vehicles to exercise caution when reversing. If the rearview camera displays a blank screen, drivers are instructed to visually verify that it is safe to back up by using their rear-view and side-view mirrors.
Rectification Process
Owners of recalled vehicles can have the issue resolved free of charge by visiting a Chrysler/Ram dealership to update the camera security software. Notification letters will be sent to affected owners starting June 19. Alternatively, customers can contact Stellantis directly at 800-853-1403, referencing recall number 40C.
Checking if Your Vehicle is Affected
Vehicle owners can check if their car is part of the recall by searching their vehicle’s make or model on either the NHTSA recall database or USA TODAY’s recall database. The NHTSA website also offers the option to search using a vehicle’s license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN), and provides information on other recalled equipment such as car seats and tires.
