KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Union Pacific Railroad engineer was hospitalized with serious injuries early Sunday after a collision between a train and a van on Saturday night. The incident occurred just before 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Guinotte Avenue and Chestnut Trafficway, approximately half a mile north of the Pendleton Heights neighborhood.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, the train involved was a remote-controlled Union Pacific train traveling eastbound with an engineer positioned on the rear platform of the last tanker car. A Ford Transit van, traveling southbound on Prospect Avenue, bypassed the lowered railroad crossing arms and entered the tracks, where it was struck by the train’s tanker car. The impact caused the van to rotate 90 degrees, pinning the engineer between the train car and the van.
The engineer was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the van escaped unharmed. The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the incident.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
