A 28-year-old man from Hammond, Indiana, is facing multiple felony charges after a dramatic incident in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Saturday. Carlos Sanchez-Roa was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery to a peace officer, and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. when police responded to a reported battery in progress and shots fired outside a business near Belmont and Central avenues. An employee at the scene directed officers to a 28-year-old man getting into a red pickup truck. As officers approached on foot and ordered the man out of the vehicle, he allegedly refused and accelerated towards them, hitting one of the officers.
In response, the officers fired their weapons at the truck as it drove away. The vehicle was later found in the 3200 block of North Menard Avenue, where Sanchez-Roa was discovered on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was arrested and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. A weapon was recovered from inside the truck.
Sanchez-Roa was due in court on Monday for a detention hearing. The Chicago Police Department responded to the incident, and the officer who was hit is receiving medical attention. The investigation is ongoing.
