Nissan Introduces Zhengzhou Nissan Z9: An Affordable Plug-in Pickup

Nissan’s Zhengzhou division has launched the Z9, a new plug-in pickup truck in the Chinese market, positioning it as the electrified sibling of the domestically-built Nissan Frontier Pro. The Z9 matches the size of the Frontier Pro and offers over 35 miles of all-electric range, with pricing starting at approximately $16,600.

The base model comes with a 17 kWh battery, providing 35 miles (60 km) of electric range. For those willing to spend more, a 32.85 kWh battery option is available, extending the range to almost 85 miles (135 km). Even the extended-range model, priced at about $23,400, remains competitive in the market.

The Z9’s competitive pricing and impressive specifications are expected to make it a successful model. Nissan has expressed international ambitions for its newest electrified pickup, with plans for global expansion. According to Stephen Ma, Chairman of Nissan (China) Management Committee, “In alignment with our ‘In China, For China, Toward the World’ strategy… Nissan will fully support ZNA’s ‘off-road strategy’.”

Mr. Mao Limin, Executive Vice President of ZNA, further emphasized the company’s global aspirations, stating, “The mission of the new generation of Chinese automotive professionals is clear – to ensure that made-in-China cars are driven across the world.”

While the Z9 is set to make an impact in the Chinese market, its availability in the US market remains uncertain due to Nissan’s current challenges. However, the success of similar affordable pickups like the Ford Maverick hybrid suggests potential for Nissan’s electrified offerings in international markets.

As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Nissan’s strategy for the Z9 and similar models will be closely watched by industry observers. The Z9’s competitive pricing and range make it an interesting development in the pickup truck segment, particularly in comparison to other models like the Slate EV.
