Introduction of Electric Hearse in Villa Clara
The municipality of Villa Clara has received an electric hearse to address the ongoing funeral transportation crisis in Cuba. The crisis stems from severe fuel shortages and the deterioration of the existing vehicle fleet used for funeral services.

Kirenia Bermúdez Quesada, an employee of the Communal Company in Villa Clara, confirmed that the delivery involved municipal officials, executives from Sancti Spíritus, and workers from the sector. The introduction of this electric vehicle has sparked discussions on social media, with many users suggesting that this initiative should be replicated in other municipalities where families have been forced to improvise means of transport for their deceased loved ones.
Cuba’s Funeral Services Crisis
The situation regarding funeral services in Cuba remains critical due to a lack of operational hearses, a shortage of spare parts, and poor maintenance. This issue affects multiple provinces, leaving families to seek alternative transportation for conducting burials. The Cuban government has introduced electric hearses as a partial measure, but these actions are deemed insufficient to address the structural crisis within the country’s funeral services system.
In various parts of Cuba, the lack of resources has led to disturbing improvisations. For instance, in Santiago de Cuba, B8 trucks typically used for transporting sugarcane have been diverted to transfer coffins. In Manzanillo, Granma province, a family had to use a cargo truck to transport a casket due to the absence of a hearse. The situation is equally dire in other provinces, with Ciego de Ávila reporting only eight operational vehicles out of 19.
Public Reaction and Government Response
The introduction of electric hearses has generated mixed reactions among the Cuban population. While seen as a positive step, many believe it is a temporary fix that doesn’t address the underlying issues plaguing the funeral services sector. Criticisms focus on the lack of stable electricity and the failure to tackle the root causes of the crisis.
The Cuban government continues to face challenges in providing dignified funeral services to its citizens. The delivery of electric hearses, while a gesture towards addressing the issue, highlights the need for a more comprehensive solution to the systemic problems affecting funeral transportation across the country.
