Rivian, still considered a startup, dominated the U.S. electric van market in 2024 by selling 13,423 units of its Commercial Van (RCV), surpassing the combined sales of industry giants Ford and Mercedes-Benz. The company’s electric van outsold Ford’s E-Transit (12,610 units) and Mercedes-Benz’s eSprinter (191 units) combined, demonstrating significant market traction despite being a relatively new player in the commercial vehicle segment.

    Sales Performance

Rivian’s success in the electric van market was driven primarily by its partnership with Amazon, although the company has diversified its customer base since the exclusivity agreement ended. Approximately 8,400 units out of 13,423 were delivered to Amazon, while the remaining 5,000 vans were sold to other customers – a number that exceeds the total sales of competitors Chevrolet BrightDrop (1,529 units) and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter combined.

    Market Context

The electric van market showed significant growth in 2024, with Rivian leading the charge. Ford’s E-Transit sales increased by 64.4% year-over-year to 12,610 units, while Chevrolet’s BrightDrop van saw a substantial 207% increase to 1,529 units. Mercedes-Benz’s eSprinter, despite having a full year of sales in 2024, managed only 191 units in the U.S. market.

    Key Statistics

    • Rivian Commercial Van: 13,423 units sold (65.9% increase from 2023)
    • Ford E-Transit: 12,610 units sold (64.4% increase from 2023)
    • Chevrolet BrightDrop: 1,529 units sold (207% increase from 2023)
    • Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: 191 units sold (new generation sales started in H2 2023)

Rivian’s achievement in the commercial EV segment comes alongside its success in the consumer market, with its R1S electric SUV featuring among the top 10 best-selling EVs in 2024. The company’s ability to compete effectively against established manufacturers in both consumer and commercial segments highlights its growing influence in the EV market.
