Mercedes-Benz Vision V: A Luxury EV Van Concept
Mercedes-Benz has ambitious plans for its upcoming VAN.EA platform, a modular electric vehicle architecture designed for various van applications. While most vehicles built on this platform will serve as passenger haulers or commercial vehicles, some will cater to the growing demand for luxurious limousine-like vehicles in select global markets. The Mercedes-Benz Vision V concept demonstrates what a VAN.EA platform vehicle designed for such luxury applications might look like.
The Vision V is configured as a four-seater, similar to the plush variations of the Lexus LM, with two seats in the front and two in the rear. The rear seating area, as shown in a Mercedes-shared photo, resembles a cross between a Maybach and a classic stretch limousine. It features reclining seats, extensive wood paneling, and glass-enclosed shelves that could accommodate a chess set or a VIP’s beverage needs. A driver’s compartment, complete with a full-length dashboard screen consistent with the new CLA, is separated from the passengers by a two-part glass-and-metal partition.
Externally, the van is distinguished by metal trim along the windows, large blocky wheels, and a distinctive catfish-like faux grille. The chunky design gives the vehicle an ultra-luxury appearance on a van footprint, appealing to customers who desire the comfort of a Maybach with the practicality of a van like the Toyota Sienna. It’s worth noting that the Vision V does not feature Maybach branding, and the brand’s press release does not indicate that this van is part of the Maybach family of ultra-luxury Mercedes offerings.
Mercedes has announced plans to sell ‘grand limousines’ under the VLS and VLE badges. The Vision V concept appears to preview a potential VLS model, which would position it alongside the S-Class, GLS, EQS, and EQS SUV at the top of the brand’s luxury lineup. While limousine-style vans from major manufacturers have historically been rare in the U.S. market, it remains to be seen whether Mercedes will buck this trend and bring a luxurious MPV to American shores should the Vision V concept reach production.
