Ram Extends Powertrain Warranty to Match Modern Vehicle Financing
Ram is increasing its powertrain warranty on its pickup trucks and vans from 5 years or 100,000 km to 10 years or 160,000 km, starting with the 2026 model year. This change is driven by the fact that buyers are financing their vehicles for longer periods, typically seven years on average, which often extends beyond the previous warranty coverage.

The decision is based on consumer financing trends. According to Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, 85% of Ram pickup buyers finance their vehicles for at least seven years, and owners tend to keep their vehicles for about 12 years. Kuniskis noted that consumers are investing significant money in their vehicles, and manufacturers need to respond by providing longer warranty coverage to protect their investment.
The extended warranty applies to both retail purchases and leases for individuals and businesses, covering the engine, transmission, transfer case, driveshafts, differentials, and axles. However, it excludes fleet orders and is limited to the original vehicle owner.
This move brings Ram’s warranty more in line with consumer realities. Kuniskis emphasized that when repairs are needed after the warranty expires but during the financing period, customers often develop a negative perception of the brand, even if the manufacturer isn’t at fault. This can lead to lost customer loyalty as they may choose competitors for their next purchase.
While this announcement specifically targets the U.S. market, it’s likely that similar coverage will be offered in Canada, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed.
The change positions Ram differently in a market where competitors like Ford and General Motors currently offer 5 years or 100,000 km powertrain protection. By extending its warranty, Ram is demonstrating a commitment to customer satisfaction and long-term vehicle reliability.
