Hankook Tire America Corp. is set to launch the iON HT, a new highway-terrain tire designed for electric light-duty pickup trucks, in August. This addition to their iON lineup features an ‘XL’ load designation, catering to the heavy battery packs and additional cargo common among light truck owners. According to Rob Williams, president of Hankook Tire America Corp., “Electric vehicles, especially emerging light-duty trucks, present unique challenges for tires.” Williams emphasizes that the iON HT is engineered to deliver exceptional EV performance, embodying the innovative spirit of the iON line.
Key Features of the iON HT
The iON HT is designed to offer the versatility of an all-season tire, coupled with lower rolling resistance and advanced technology to maximize the vehicle’s range, durability, and comfort. Some of its key features include:
- Roll Lite Compound and Opti Cure Technology: These work in tandem to reduce internal friction and optimize curing temperature, resulting in lower rolling resistance and improved battery efficiency.
- ProDurable Compound and Opti Tread Technology: This combination enhances wear resistance by evenly distributing road pressure, thereby extending tread life. Hankook claims the iON HT can last up to 80,000 miles, one of the longest-lasting EV tires available.
- 3D-embossed sipe and flared shoulder grooves: These provide grip and efficient water evacuation, contributing to reliable all-season traction, even in wet conditions.
- Aggressive shoulder block design and iON Clad construction: These features protect against impacts without compromising ride comfort.
Availability and Specifications
The iON HT will initially be available in five sizes, ranging from 18 to 22 inches, with UTQG ratings of 900/A/A and speed ratings of T or H. This new tire joins Hankook’s growing portfolio of EV-specific tires. The company is showcasing the iON HT at the 2025 Electrify Expo in Los Angeles on June 21-22, highlighting its commitment to innovative EV solutions.
