BMW 5 Series Takes the Lead in European Sales
The BMW 5 Series has emerged as the top-selling luxury sedan in Europe, outperforming both the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 during the first four months of 2025. BMW reported 20,402 units sold between January and April, significantly ahead of Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s 15,811 units and Audi A6’s 13,774 units.

This sales surge indicates a clear shift in consumer preference in the premium sedan market, with BMW’s recent redesign resonating well with European buyers. The electric BMW i5 played a crucial role in this success, accounting for 8,843 of the total 5 Series sales. This puts it ahead of the Audi A6 e-tron, which sold 7,460 units, and the Mercedes EQE sedan, which managed only 3,740 units during the same period.
Strong Electrification Strategy
The BMW 5 Series’s success can be attributed to its well-rounded offering across different drivetrain types. The model’s electrification has been a key factor in shaping the 2025 European sales landscape. With the Jaguar XF and Maserati Ghibli exiting production, the competition in the executive sedan category has diminished, leaving the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6 as the primary contenders.

Despite year-on-year growth for all three models, BMW’s momentum stands out. The BMW 5 Series saw a 56% sales jump, far surpassing the Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s 19% growth and Audi A6’s 10% increase. As the year progresses, Mercedes and Audi will need to implement bold strategies to close the gap with BMW.
For now, the BMW 5 Series remains the clear leader in European sales, driven by its strong design updates, high electric adoption, and market availability. The changing luxury car landscape has seen BMW take the forefront, leaving competitors to play catch-up.
