Vehicles Submerged at Black Rock Sands
Three vehicles, including two camper vans and a VW Beetle, were submerged by strong waves at Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog in north Wales within days of each other. The incidents occurred on June 8, Friday 13, and the day after, respectively.

Black Rock Sands is one of the few beaches in north Wales where cars are allowed to drive. However, its gentle slope means the tide comes in quickly, often catching drivers off guard. Local resident Kevin Gibson said many people ignore warning signs about soft sand and fast tides.

‘It’s one of the very few beaches which you can drive on. It’s very popular. People don’t take notice. When they drive on the beach, they are warned not to drive past warning signs of soft sand and fast tide. Unfortunately, we are seeing cars get caught out all too often as the warnings are ignored,’ Gibson explained.
The local council charges £8 for parking, but drivers must be cautious of the rapidly changing tide conditions.
