EV Fire Risks Prompt Urgent Safety Warnings

Pierce County officials have issued urgent safety warnings after a fatal crash involving an electric vehicle (EV). The incident, which occurred late Monday night, underscores the potential fire risks associated with EVs, particularly lithium-ion batteries.

In the recent crash, a Tesla driver was killed after driving at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. According to law enforcement, a sheriff’s deputy attempted to aid the driver but was unable to because the vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames.

“We usually only have seconds to help these victims when vehicles do catch fire,” stated PCSO Spokesperson Carly Cappetto.

The deputy chose to prioritize their own safety due to the intensity of the fire. The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, taking into account possible factors such as speed, medical emergencies, or additional elements.

The incident has prompted warnings about the challenges first responders face with EV fires. Lithium-ion batteries can ignite rapidly after a crash, which shortens the window of time available to rescue individuals.

Cappetto emphasized the necessity for law enforcement agencies to upgrade their strategies and resources when responding to EV-related collisions and fires.

“We have to respond quicker and faster. We have to have better tools to get access into these vehicles to get these victims out,” Cappetto told KOMO News.

The medical examiner will determine the driver’s cause of death.
