    Ford e-Transit Review

The Ford Transit has been a staple on British roads for decades, and the electric version marks its most significant evolution yet.

Ford’s move to electric vans provides a real alternative for businesses wanting to cut emissions. This review explores the e-Transit’s strengths and weaknesses.

    What Is It?

The Ford Transit, originally introduced in 1965, has always been a spacious, steel-bodied van, powered by various engines. The electric version, introduced in 2020 with a larger battery in 2024, represents a significant shift.

    Why Go Electric?

The UK government’s grant schemes offer up to £5,000 off the price of larger electric vans, like the e-Transit, making them more attractive financially.

Electric delivery vans are well-suited for their use. They’re quiet, easy to operate, produce zero local emissions, can enter low-emission zones, and often recharge at a depot overnight.

    Range and Performance

With the latest battery options (68kWh or 89kWh), the e-Transit can achieve over 200 miles of real-world range, ideal for many delivery routes.

The e-Transit retains the standard Transit’s versatility, offering different lengths and heights, plus a chassis cab option for specialized builds. The motor is between the rear axle, making it rear-wheel drive.

Independent rear suspension improves the ride, whether loaded or empty.

    Cost Considerations

While the initial purchase price is higher than a diesel Transit (£49,545 starting price, excluding VAT), the e-Transit is significantly cheaper to service and run.

Using off-peak charging at home or a depot, charging costs can be very low. However, relying on public fast chargers increases the cost substantially.

The e-Transit comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty, demonstrating Ford’s confidence in its reliability.

    Ford Pro Ecosystem

Ford’s ‘Ford Pro’ ecosystem simplifies fleet management by offering services from vehicle financing to software and servicing. This includes help with charging infrastructure and strategy.

    Verdict

The Ford e-Transit excels as a practical and comfortable electric van, supported by Ford Pro’s comprehensive services. It’s particularly well-suited for short-range, multi-drop delivery services where the numbers add up.

It’s among the best electric vans to consider for a business looking to electrify its fleet.
