Florida Woman Admits to Embezzling Over $127,000 and Forging Documents

A 46-year-old woman from Panama City, Florida, has admitted to embezzling a significant amount of money from her former Orange County employer, according to prosecutors. The woman, Meghan Henesy, also forged a contract falsely claiming she owned the company.

According to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler, Henesy pleaded guilty on Monday, February 24th. Henesy, who served as a bookkeeper and office manager for a Wallkill-based title insurance company from 2020 to 2022, employed several fraudulent schemes to steal funds for her personal use, the District Attorney’s Office stated.

Her fraudulent activities included issuing and cashing checks made out to herself. She also forged a contract to falsely claim ownership of the company, utilizing it to purchase a luxury vehicle in the business’s name. In addition, she falsified business records to disguise the stolen funds as legitimate company expenses.

At her plea hearing, Henesy admitted to stealing over $50,000, although investigators determined the actual amount exceeded $127,000. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend a sentence of two to six years in prison, along with a full restitution order of $127,000. The sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4th.

District Attorney David Hoovler stated that Henesy was in a “position of trust and abused that trust to enrich herself.” He added, “The staggering amount of money that this defendant stole demands significant punishment. That the defendant took efforts to cover up her crimes further compounds her culpability.”

Hoovler also credited the New York State Police for their exhaustive investigation, which led to Henesy’s arrest.
