Renault Announces Return of Historic Van Names with Electric Models

Renault is revitalizing its commercial vehicle lineup by resurrecting two iconic names – Estafette and Goelette – while also introducing an updated Trafic. All three vans are slated to be fully electric, reflecting the French automaker’s commitment to electrification.

The Estafette name, which conjures memories of vans produced from the late 1950s to the mid-1980s, will grace a new model boasting a futuristic design. This new Estafette takes inspiration from a concept vehicle unveiled at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover last year. The van features a sleek silhouette, a sliding door, and a roller shutter door at the back, with running boards for convenient access.

The new compact van spans 207.4 inches in length, 75.5 inches in width, and 102.3 inches in height, offering ample interior space. Accessibility has been prioritized, with a generous windscreen and expansive side glass designed to enhance outward visibility. In addition to the modern Estafette, the legendary Goelette name is also making a comeback.

The redesigned Goelette will be available in three configurations: chassis cab, box, and tipper, offering a high degree of customization for commercial applications. The rear section of the vehicle is adaptable to meet different business requirements. It can be equipped with or without running boards and features a wraparound windscreen for enhanced visibility.

The Renault Trafic, which has been in production since the 1980s, will also receive a makeover. Like the Estafette and Goelette, the updated Trafic boasts a contemporary aesthetic, aiming to make vans more appealing. The goal resembles Hyundai’s strategy with the Staria Load. The Trafic is under 74.8 inches (1.9 meters) tall, so it can easily access most European underground parking areas. Renault designed the new Trafic with a notable upper rear spoiler and built-in deflectors to improve aerodynamics. Additional features include asymmetrical hinged doors and ruggedized lower body protection.

All three vans will sport the “E-Tech” designation, signifying their fully electric powertrains. Production for the new Estafette, Goelette, and Trafic will be based in Sandouville, France. The vans are scheduled to launch in 2026.

The trio was developed by Flexis, a company established last year through collaboration between Renault, Volvo, and the French logistics firm CMA CGM Group. Renault and Volvo are each investing €300 million in Flexis over the next couple of years, while CMA CGM Group’s investment totals €120 million.
