Police in York Region are cautioning the public about the “devastating consequences” of towing individuals behind moving vehicles. The warning comes after a youth was killed earlier this month while being towed on a sled behind a pickup truck.
On February 12, 2025, just before 10 p.m., officers were called to the Sassafras Circle and Sugarforest Drive area of Vaughan following reports of an injury. Heavy snowfall blanketed the city north of Toronto at the time.
Investigators determined that a youth was riding on a sled towed by a pickup truck when the injuries occurred.
The youth was transported to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
The 17-year-old driver of the pickup truck has been charged with dangerous driving and dangerous driving causing death.
“York Regional Police reminds drivers that actions and decisions made while behind the wheel of a motor vehicle can have permanent and devastating consequences for you, your family and for others on the road,” police stated in a press release.
Police added that drivers who engage in such dangerous behavior could also face stunt driving charges, which can result in a 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day license suspension.
