1955 Alfa Romeo Camper Van on Bring a Trailer: So Cute, So Obscure
Here’s a delightful Italian camper van, a vehicle perfectly suited for a leisurely holiday.
Yes, believe it or not, Alfa Romeo once produced vans. And isn’t the name “Autotutto” fun to say?
This charming vintage camper is on sale through Bring a Trailer. While it may not break any speed records, that’s hardly the point.
A Roman Holiday on Wheels
Dreaming of a “Roman Holiday”? This vintage camper, built by Alfa Romeo, might just be the ticket. It’s currently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). While it’ll require a plane ticket and some time off, it’s difficult to imagine a more fitting way to explore the sun-drenched Mediterranean.
Alfa Romeo is best known for the racing cars that Enzo Ferrari cut his teeth on. However, this wonderfully green T10 Autotutto is one of Alfa’s often-overlooked commercial models – vans and small trucks that delivered fresh foccacia, olives, and other goods through the streets of Rome and beyond. This particular example began its life in Sicily and later Modena, before being converted into a camper and refurbished. The details are lovely, from the white piping on the green vinyl seats to the roof-mounted 16-inch spare tire, a jaunty touch.
Originally, the T10 could be equipped with either a 750-cc engine, which was also used in Alfa’s sedans, or a small supercharged diesel inline twin. This camper has the latter, which has a displacement of 1158 cc and a modest 31 horsepower. Paired with a four-speed manual transmission, the top speed is just 47 mph.
That’s not ideal for racing down the autostrada or tackling the Alps. Instead, imagine having this little camper shipped to Sardinia or Sicily, and spending a few weeks exploring small towns on scenic back roads, stopping at quaint cafes, and simply enjoying the journey. The camper includes a gas stove for cooking, a sink for cleanup, and a picnic set for enjoying lunch under an olive tree.
Bring along a vintage film camera, and you’ll have the complete 1950s European holiday experience. La dolce vita awaits.
The auction ends on February 27.
