The U.S. Commerce Department is poised to unveil proposed regulations, potentially as early as Monday, that would restrict the use of Chinese and Russian-manufactured hardware and software in connected vehicles, according to individuals with knowledge of the plans.
The Commerce Department has been actively engaging with industry specialists in recent months to address security apprehensions linked to the evolving landscape of connected vehicles, often referred to as “smart cars.”
The proposed measures would encompass prohibitions on the utilization and evaluation of Chinese and Russian technologies within automated driving systems and vehicle communication networks, the sources revealed. While the primary focus of the restrictions centers on software components, the proposed rules will also address certain hardware elements, the people noted.
