Mack Trucks and Terex Utilities have unveiled plans to introduce their next-generation zero-emissions utility bucket truck at Work Truck Week in Indiana later this month. The new truck, developed jointly by Terex Utilities and Mack Trucks on a Mack MD7 Electric Class 7 chassis, is designed for extended travel distances and increased cargo capacity, making it ideal for upgrading or restoring power services.

To achieve zero-emission operation, Terex has integrated an Optima HR55 aerial device, which draws power from a HyPower SmartPTO (Power Take Off) from Viatec. The SmartPTO replaces the conventional mechanical PTO traditionally powered by an internal combustion generator. This innovation eliminates the need for a noisy idling engine, significantly reducing utility workers’ exposure to both toxic exhaust fumes and heavy particulate emissions, even with current emission standards.
“Our collaboration with Mack Trucks represents continued progress in zero-emissions utility vehicles,” stated Tyler Schwingler, Terex Utilities product marketing manager. “By combining our industry-leading Optima HR55 aerial device with Mack’s innovative MD7 Electric chassis, we’re providing utility companies with a solution that doesn’t compromise on performance or capability while supporting their sustainability goals.”
In addition, to reinforce its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, the Mack MD Electric is equipped with the advanced 3rd Eye digital platform. This platform integrates AI-driven camera systems to enhance both safety and productivity. The system includes up to six high-definition cameras that provide a real-time, 460-degree view on a 7-inch in-cab monitor, effectively eliminating blind spots during reversing and navigation through busy work sites.
“This electric bucket truck represents the next natural step in our commitment to sustainable transportation solutions,” said George Fotopoulos, vice president of E-mobility at Mack Trucks. “Our lightweight electric chassis provides the capability to handle more demanding applications. Coupled with Terex’ expertise in utility equipment, we’re delivering a solution that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in zero tailpipe emissions utility vehicles.”
Terex will showcase its new Mack MD Electric-based utility bucket truck at this year’s Work Truck Week, held at the Indianapolis Convention Center from March 8-11.
Electrek’s Take
If this news seems familiar, it’s because similar technology has been in development for some time. The HyPower SmartPTO was covered a few months ago in a piece focusing on Enwin Utilities. Those trucks used a Class 7 (33,000 lb. GVWR) International eMV Series BEV. While the International is indeed a quality vehicle, the Mack MD Electric raises the bar by offering a longer driving range than the eMV and greater rear axle capacity compared to others within its class. The MD also shares crucial components with its heavy-duty cabs and chassis, providing easier parts sourcing. Furthermore, the vehicle’s connection to Volvo’s global reputation for quality and progressive ideologies adds another layer of appeal.
