Giraffe Transport Draws Attention in Metro Detroit
DETROIT – A giraffe transported in the back of a truck recently caught the attention of a driver in Metro Detroit, quickly becoming a viral sensation. The unusual sight, spotted in Macomb County, sparked public interest and a wave of online comments.

The giraffe was later identified as belonging to Darren Wehner, a taxidermist associated with St. Clair Flats Taxidermy. The story’s popularity led to speculation and jokes about the creature’s authenticity, with comparisons to the iconic Toys R Us giraffe.
Behind the Unusual Transport
Wehner clarified the situation with FOX 2, confirming that the giraffe was, in fact, real. He is an experienced taxidermist and big game hunter with safari partnerships in South Africa. The giraffe, now deceased, had died of natural causes at a zoo. Wehner had been commissioned to mount the animal for display in an undisclosed museum.
“My job is to preserve them so you can appreciate them forever. Some people may find it strange or different but to me, it’s art,” Wehner explained.
During a 60-hour period of working on the piece, the giraffe’s transport caused a social media stir. Wehner described the process, stating, “When we receive it, it’s no different than leather. It’s just leather with hair on it.”

A Unique Perspective on Wildlife
Not all of the animals Wehner interacts with end up preserved. His farm in Ira is home to a nine-month-old kangaroo named Atlas. Wehner also advocates for “green hunts,” which involve the use of tranquilizer darts rather than bullets, as exemplified by a replica white rhino on his property.

“We love animals. I know it’s a counter-intuitive argument. A lot of people don’t understand, but I promise you we love animals,” Wehner asserted.
