Dead Giraffe Spotted Riding Through Detroit in Back of Truck
Images of a dead giraffe transported in the bed of a pickup truck near Detroit, Michigan, have captured the public’s attention. The photos, shared by Nathan Schemansky, showed the giraffe’s neck bent, its head cushioned on a protective covering. This prompted many social media users to question the animal’s authenticity and the story behind it.
It has been revealed that the giraffe was real, confirming the authenticity of the pictures. Darren Wehner, who is a taxidermist and works at St. Clair Flats Taxidermy, has come forward to bring context to the unsettling shots. Wehner confirmed that the giraffe died of old age at a zoo, explaining that he was commissioned to mount the animal for display at a museum.
Wehner, who is also a big game hunter, spoke about his taxidermy process and his love for the animals. He mentioned that the process of mounting the giraffe took about 60 hours. His work frequently involves partnerships with safaris in South Africa, who supply him with animals.
“My job is to preserve them so you can appreciate them forever,” Wehner said. “Some people may find it strange or different, but to me, it’s art.”
Wehner explained that his shop is filled with various exotic creatures, including a rhinoceros, lion, tiger, and zebra. He also emphasized that in Africa the meat of any harvested animal is utilized, and that nothing is wasted. “We love animals,” Wehner added. “I know it’s a counterintuitive argument and a lot of people don’t understand but I promise you, we love animals.”
