With the Mint 400 festivities underway in Las Vegas, Chevrolet has revealed its newest contender for this weekend’s race: the Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2 Concept. This all-electric race truck boasts an impressive 1,100 horsepower and is designed to tackle the multi-day event using primarily factory-sourced components.
Chad Hall and Hall Racing will pilot the concept truck, continuing a successful collaboration between Hall and Chevrolet. The truck serves as a promotional platform for the upcoming Silverado EV Trail Boss model, scheduled to hit showrooms this summer. The Trail Boss features a factory lift kit, unique 18-inch wheels, and 35-inch tires. The concept takes it further with a prototype set of Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve continuously adaptive dampers. This setup provides over 13 inches of wheel travel at each axle, complemented by massive 37-inch BF Goodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires.
The truck benefits from the tri-motor setup found in the GMC Hummer EV, delivering 1,100 hp. Locking differentials at both ends and added underbody armor will help maintain stability during the multiple loops of the Mint 400.
“There is no better proving ground to test the limits of our vehicles than competitive racing,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “The Silverado EV ZR2 race truck concept, which uses 98% GM production parts, showcases some of the best of Chevrolet to produce a beyond-capable pickup to tackle a challenging race of the Mint 400’s magnitude.”
While Chevrolet emphasizes the Trail Boss, it’s almost certain we’ll see a production electric ZR2 model eventually. Though the ZR2 name might not have the same recognition as the Raptor brand, ZR2 models have gained a dedicated following. Given the proven off-road capabilities of GM’s Hummer EVs, performance shouldn’t be a concern. However, customer interest remains to be seen.
