Giraffe Makes Unusual Appearance in Metro Detroit
DETROIT (FOX 2) – A sight that initially seemed unbelievable proved to be true: a giraffe was indeed transported in the bed of a pickup truck in the Metro Detroit area.
The unusual sighting occurred in Macomb County, quickly capturing the attention of local residents and sparking discussions on social media.

Darren Wehner, a taxidermist and big game hunter, confirmed the authenticity of the animal. He explained that the giraffe had died of natural causes and he was commissioned to preserve it.
“My job is to preserve them so you can appreciate them forever. Some people may find it strange or different, but to me, it’s art,” Wehner stated.
Wehner, who works at St. Clair Flats Taxidermy, was transporting the preserved giraffe at the time of the sighting. He also has safari partnerships in South Africa and is dedicated to his work.

The giraffe, which died of old age at a zoo, is being prepared for display at an unnamed museum, Wehner confirmed.
The discovery immediately led to online jokes referencing “Toys R Us” and questions about the animal’s authenticity.
Wehner emphasized that he loves animals and takes great care in his profession. He also promotes “green hunts”, using tranquilizer darts instead of bullets.

Wehner also has a 9-month-old joey named Atlas on his farm in Ira, which is where he cares for his animals when they are not on display.
