Reddit’s “What is this Car?” Challenge
The internet is a vast repository of information. When it comes to identifying obscure vehicles, the r/whatisthiscar subreddit on Reddit is often the first, and last, stop for automotive detectives. This community has a knack for identifying even the most obscure cars.
However, a recent post has the community stumped. The unidentified vehicle has been sitting in a private storage lot in Vancouver, Canada, since at least 2015 and is shrouded in mystery.

The Mystery Vehicle
Reddit user rfadouglas posted a photo of the car, hoping the community could identify it.

The tarp covering the car adds to the challenge, but what can be seen provides several clues.
The most noticeable feature is the rear end which has a distinctive tail light design and a prominent grille that suggests a rear-mounted engine layout. The grille features odd cutouts around the four exhaust tips.
One Reddit user observed the presence of a radiator behind the grille’s vanes. This detail throws a wrench in the possibilities, as some users initially thought it might be a Volkswagen Beetle – known for its air-cooled engine.
Further complicating the mystery, the center side panel seems to be missing entirely. Theories abound: Was there once a door? Is this car a Frankensteinian combination of parts?
Theories and Speculation
User rfadouglas noted there are several boat builders in the area. This might suggest that the car is a custom build combining automotive and boat-building skills. Most Reddit users believe the car is a one-off or custom-built on a VW platform. Others have noted that it could be a heavily modified Chevy Cobalt, possibly a mid-engine project.
You Be the Judge.
