BYD E-Vali: Electric Van Launches in Europe
BYD has expanded its European market presence beyond passenger vehicles and into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector with the introduction of the all-electric E-Vali van. The vehicle was showcased at the IAA Transportation event in Hanover, signaling BYD’s intent to compete in this growing market segment.
The E-Vali, slated for a 2025 launch, boasts a range of 155 miles according to the WLTP cycle. This positions the E-Vali to contend with well-established competitors like the Volkswagen Crafter and Renault Master.
Design and Features
The E-Vali’s design emphasizes both functionality and versatility. The base model stretches 6 meters in length, 2.09 meters in width, and 2.78 meters in height. It features a wheelbase of 3.87 meters. Extended versions will reach 7 meters in length with a wheelbase of 4.55 meters, increasing load capacity from 13.9 to 17.9 cubic meters.
The van’s exterior presents a practical aesthetic, drawing design cues from older Ford Transit models and the Hyundai Staria. A low front end is highlighted by headlights with dual LED lines that complement the decorative elements in the grille. The loading sill is positioned low for ease of access—435 mm at the rear and 467 mm on the side—with the sliding door offering 1,337 mm of space for loading.
The cargo area can be tailored for diverse business needs, and the cabin borrows design cues from BYD’s existing vehicle lineup. Inside, a horizontal digital instrument cluster is paired with a sizable 12.8-inch infotainment display. The infotainment system includes voice control and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Performance and Charging
BYD will offer the E-Vali with two powertrain options: one producing 136 PS and the other 204 PS. Both versions will be available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with top speeds reaching 55 mph and 75 mph, respectively. Both configurations will use an 80.64 kWh battery, supporting AC charging up to 22 kW and DC fast charging up to 188 kW. With DC charging, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
The E-Vali will also come equipped with a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, giving it the ability to transfer energy to other devices or vehicles. Gross vehicle weight (GVW) is 3.5 tonnes for the compact model, and 4.25 tonnes for the larger variant, while the payload ranges from 700 to 1,450 kg, depending on the configuration.
Future Prospects
Specific pricing and launch dates for the European market remain unannounced, as the company assesses the E-Vali’s market potential on the continent.
